Agreement with IMF in El Salvador sets off controversy

San Salvador, Jun 12 (Prensa Latina) An agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), not yet finalized, has created controversies in the country's political and economic circles.

Suecy Callejas, vice president of the Legislative Assembly and deputy of Nuevas Ideas, described as “irresponsible” those who speak of an increase in taxes to meet the agreement, and did not rule out that adjustments may occur.

Callejas said during an interview that the Parliament will work to “not generate more taxes”, announcing that “we are not going to endure” an increase in taxes, and stressed that those who speculate with taxes do so to create fear among the population.

The deputy clarified that the negotiation with the Fund has not yet been closed because the meeting point between “the prerogatives of the IMF and what the country needs has not been reached; it does not mean that we are not going to make adjustments.”

Callejas stressed that in a virtual agreement with the IMF, El Salvador has “every right” to indicate what things it can or cannot accept. “It’s all negotiation,” she said.
