NGO demands implementation of Security Council resolution on Gaza

Ramallah, Jun 11 (Prensa Latina) The Save The Children non-governmental organization demanded the immediate implementation of a UN Security Council resolution that calls for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, which is still under Israeli attacks.

In a statement, the NGO considered the measure positive, although long overdue after more than eight months of conflict.

“It is the obligation of all Member States now to turn these words into action,” the agency said. “The resolution is a step in the right direction: the minimum that children in Gaza expect from an institution that has let them down,” said Tamer Kirolos, Save the Children’s regional advocacy director for the Middle East.

The activist warned if the proposal is not accepted immediately, the international community, the Security Council, the UN General Assembly, and all its member states must adopt rapid measures to guarantee a definitive ceasefire.

Kirolos indicated that even with its implementation, it is already too late “for tens of thousands of murdered, mutilated, kidnapped and displaced children.” However, he noted, hundreds of thousands more will be saved.

The bill was approved yesterday by 14 votes in favor with one abstention and is based on a three-phase proposal recently announced by US President Joe Biden.

In principle, the plan demands an immediate ceasefire, the release of all Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, the return of displaced Gazans to their homes, and the complete withdrawal of the Israeli Army.

That phase would give way to a second one, allowing the war to end permanently. Nevertheless, the Palestinian militias want a written commitment to its implementation. But, on the other hand, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu does not want to stop the fighting and only insists on vague formulas on the subject.
