It is a proposal that Uruguay will seek to position when it assumes the pro tempore Presidency of the bloc in July.
Insecurity and crimes related to drug trafficking are among the priorities and concerns of Uruguay and other countries in the region, said the Minister of the Interior, Nicolás Martinelli, at a recent meeting of Interior Ministers in the capital of Paraguay.
Martinelli proposed the creation of a regional multidisciplinary group to address the expansion of criminal groups, terrorism, and the advance of fentanyl coming from the United States which is already present in Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, and Chile.
The Minister considered that in the region there is little talk about the expansion of fentanyl, a drug that is more powerful than heroin and morphine. “In those towns where it has arrived, it has been voracious in its ability to destroy,” he warned.
The minister expressed concern about the increase in violence in “a society that cries out for us to take charge of every second, every minute, and every hour in which many lives of our fellow citizens are claimed.”
