Unilateral US policy limits communications area in Cuba

Havana, June 10 (Prensa Latina) The unilateral measures imposed by the United States government today constitute the main impediment to achieving greater development in the field of Information and Communications Technologies in Cuba.

This is what the First Vice Minister of Communications Wilfredo González expressed to the Cuban News Agency, when referring to the dissimilar platforms blocked for users residing in the Caribbean country.

This limits the possibilities of more comprehensive training of professionals, data management, and even electronic commerce between both countries, he noted.

González emphasized the recent refusal of the US government to the island to access an underwater fiber optic cable system closer to the national territory to expand and diversify international connectivity.

The fact influences that the repeal of foreign currency by the Cuban side to improve this connectivity is greater, the official added.

He highlighted that said fiber optic technology has its origins in Cuba following an initiative by the leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro and Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez.

González denounced the existence of regulations by the US Treasury Department that denies access to certain technologies with a certain US component index.

Added to these factors are the sanctions applied to businessmen who visit the country for commercial purposes, he noted.
