Sheinbaum and AMLO kick off presidential transition process in Mexico

Mexico City, Jun 10 (Prensa Latina) Mexico's President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum are meeting on Monday to begin the transition process after confirming the victory of the political representative in the June 2 elections.

Lopez Obrador and Sheinbaum waited for the official conclusion of the vote count, whose results were announced this Sunday and ratified Sheinbaum as a winner.

The program provides that the presidential transition process in Mexico this year will be extended for 91 days.

The National Electoral Institute (INE) reported on Sunday that the candidate of the ruling Sigamos Haciendo Historia (Let’s Continue Making History) coalition, led by the MORENA party, received 35.9 million votes, that is, the support of 59.7 percent of those who voted a week ago.

Xochitl Galvez, candidate of the opposition Fuerza y Corazón por México (Strength and Heart for Mexico) coalition, was second with 16.5 million votes, or 27.4 percent of the total.

An estimated 60,115,184 Mexicans, representing 61 percent of those registered to vote, cast their votes in the elections. This means six out of ten registered voters exercised their right to vote. Claudia Sheinbaum became on Sunday the first woman ever to win the presidency of Mexico.

As part of her government program, she promised not to increase fuel and electricity prices, promote fiscal discipline, and respect press freedom and freedom of assembly.

She also assured to further empower social programs to fight poverty, boost national industry.
