In a message for the 65th anniversary of that news agency, the grandson of one of its founders and first general director (Jorge Ricardo Masetti, 1929-1964) sent greetings to the workers of that institution and congratulated them for more than six decades practicing the profession at the service of truth.
This new anniversary finds Prensa Latina at a crucial moment. It will surely address the communication challenges of today’s world with the same decision that its founders projected and that several journalists and communicators continued in these 65 years, thus renewing their efforts and teachings for the new generations, he noted.
I congratulate you and thank you for your unwavering commitment to truth and excellence, providing journalism about Cuba, the Revolution and for the entire world. A big hug and happy birthday, he concluded. Founded on June 16, 1959 to confront the disinformation and manipulation campaign of the large monopolies, the agency had Masetti as one of its main figures and the renowned Argentine writer Rodolfo Walsh (1927-1977), Colombian Gabriel Garcia Marquez, among other great Latin American personalities.
According to the writer Stella Calloni, Prensa Latina “is an example of journalistic ethics, because it respects the right of the people to receive truthful information, in a world where the hegemonic power takes over most of the mass media and technologies, sowing lies and hatred.”
