Cuban science seeks sustainable exploitation of natural resources

Camagüey, Cuba, June 10 (Prensa Latina) The best exploitation today of marine-coastal resources without damaging the ecosystem, results in commercial and tourist potential for the scientific community of the largest region of Cuba.

Led by the Camagüey Environmental Research Center (CIMAC), the Resilient Blue Tourism project in the Santa Lucía destination is today a priority among those of its kind at the institution.

This was made known to Prensa Latina by the Center’s Research Associate, Damaris Hernández.

“We also have two very attractive projects due to the sustainable uses they make of marine-coastal ecosystems,” she explained at first.

“We are talking about the Resilient Blue Tourism project in the Santa Lucía-Camagüey destination, also located in the municipality of Nuevitas.”

Regarding it and its characteristics, the interviewee said “it synergizes with the project of sustainable management of biodiversity in Cuba, also known in short as Talasia (seagrass also known as sargassum).”

Abundant on the beaches of the northern coast of the province is Thalasia Testudinum, due to its scientific name, science seeks to put the natural material to better use, and thereby even intensify the visit of foreigners to the area.

“The aim is to manufacture medicinal products with anti-cancer and photoprotective purposes, and other extracts that can also be used to make cosmetics and for the pharmaceutical industry,” said the also professor at the University of Camagüey.

The Master of Science also assured that this project is coordinated at the national level with the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment.

Through multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaboration, CIMAC seeks to contribute to the sustainable development of the province of Camagüey, and to this end it launches research of this type.
