Deputy prime minister praises agricultural work in Cuban province

Sancti Spíritus, Cuba Jun 7 (Prensa Latina) Deputy Prime Minister Inés María Chapman is paying a working visit on Friday to several agricultural areas in the north and south of this central Cuban province, where she met with local leaders and workers.

Chapman, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) is accompanied by Sancti Spiritus Governor Alexis Lorente, leaders of the agricultural sector and local authorities.

The tour began in the agricultural zone of Batey Colorado, which belongs to Empresa Agroindustrial de Granos Valle del Caonao, in the northern municipality of Yaguajay, one of the grain producing areas of the province.

She learned about the company’s development projects to achieve self-sufficiency and contribute to the province, in areas of high demand such as corn and soybean, which are used to produce animal feed.

Company Director Celso Díaz explained that some 38 hectares of transgenic corn and about 14 hectares of soybean, as well as other short-cycle crops, which essential to meet the demand of the population, have been planted in the valley.

Here, more than 500 hectares are protected by irrigation, with the use of Central Pivot machines (fregat) and new systems received through international collaboration, he said.

The deputy prime minister praised the working strategies of the company, which is committed to fulfilling the national strategy and meeting the needs of the population, and was also interested in the use of organic fertilizers, as an alternative to the current shortage of resources.

According to Chapman’s agenda, in the afternoon, she will visit the municipality of Sancti Spíritus, where La Zaza, Cuba’s largest dam, currently with scarce water reserves, is located.
