We welcome the agreement between the delegations of the Colombian Government and the Second Marquetalia armed rebel group to begin a negotiating table formally, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez wrote on X.
The head of Cuban diplomacy assured that “invited by the parties, Cuba was represented and will act as one of the guarantors of this process for peace in Colombia.”
On Wednesday, the Colombian Government and the Second Marquetalia, a dissident group of the extinct Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People’s Army (FARC-EP), announced the decision after a meeting between the parties in the Venezuelan capital.
The meeting was attended by High Commissioner for Peace Otty Patiño, the head of the aforementioned guerrilla structure, alias “Iván Márquez”, and members of the accompanying delegations.
Also present at the meeting were the representatives from Cuba, Norway and Venezuela, the delegate of the special representative of the United Nations Secretary General, and the Episcopal Conference of Colombia, among other personalities, also participated.
According to the official announcement, Cuba, Norway and Venezuela will act as guarantors, while the representative of the UN Secretary General and the Episcopal Conference will be permanent companions.
