Cuba calls to halt desertification on World Environment Day

GO6KLF5XMAAoRPj-1
Havana, Jun 5 (Prensa Latina) Cuba joins the global celebration of World Environment Day on Wednesday, with a broad program of activities focused on reflecting on the loss of biodiversity and desertification.

World Environment Day is celebrated annually on June 5 and was established by the United Nations in 1974.

The 2024 Day is focused on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience, which are closely related to the biodiversity lost, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA) stressed.

Also included is the ecosystem destruction worldwide, whose rehabilitation can positively influence the reduction of the effects of climate change and ensure the food security of nations.

The program of activities for the date includes film screenings, theoretical events, keynote speeches, tree planting across the country, socialization of public good messages in social media and mass media, and participatory activities with the communities.

The date aims to raise awareness to restore ecosystems to stop land degradation processes and recover their capacity to respond to extreme drought events, CITMA stated.

Las Tunas province hosts the celebrations due to its results in the system of work and control to implement the National Environmental Strategy at a territorial level, with an agreement formalized by the Provincial Council.

CITMA is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, so June fifth’s main activities are dedicated to this date.
