Monusco spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Kedagni Mensah, stated that these forces are supporting the army in its clashes with the insurgents around the town of Kanyabayonga, in Lubero territory, North Kivu province.
The blue helmets are deployed for the protection of the local population and patrolling the area in the face of deteriorating security situation.
“As of May 30, 2024, the Nepalese Rapid Reaction Battalion has been redeployed to the area to reinforce the permanent operational base in Kanyabayonga,” Mensah explained.
He added that the reinforcement of the Monusco presence is strictly within the framework of fulfilling its mandate by protecting and assisting the civilian population.
“The Nepalese Rapid Reaction Battalion and the Malawi Battalion have continued to provide assistance to the displaced, coordinating their operational activities with the Armed Forces and reinforcing their defensive positions,” the military officer referred.
He mentioned that one of the main functions has been escorting some of the displaced to safe shelters, providing medical care and facilitating the movement of civilians.
