Four Costa Ricans die in clash between attackers and police officers

San José, May 4 (Prensa Latina) A toll of four Costa Ricans dead and two wounded resulted from an attack by unknown gunmen in the middle of the street repelled by police who reacted to the aggression, local media reported.

The assailants killed two of the victims in a mechanic shop in the canton (district) of Parrita in the southeastern province of Puntarenas, Teletica channel said.

The reaction of the uniformed officers was to shoot at the assailants, two of whom also perished as they fled the scene, the local director of the Judicial Investigation Organism Randall Zúñiga confirmed to the television station.

According to the official, the group of four subjects, which some sources considered “sicarios” (hired killers), began the assault after arriving in a small vehicle to the establishment and shooting the first two people, who died on the spot.

“The team of agents -the officer explains – was doing some errands in the area and perceived an attack alert, tracked and located the suspicious vehicle and ordered the suspicious passengers to stop, but they started shooting”.

The two wounded police officers were stabilized at a local clinic, one with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the head and the other with a bullet impact on a shoulder.
