Chileans call on their Government to support Cuba

Santiago de Chile, Jun 4 (Prensa Latina) Representatives of several Chilean society organizations delivered on Tuesday a letter addressed to President Gabriel Boric, in which they ask for support for Cuba, demand an end to the US blockade and promote bilateral trade.

On behalf of trade union, social and solidarity organizations, dozens of people gathered in front of the Salvador Allende monument and marched with Cuban flags along Morande Street to the front of the Palace of La Moneda, where they deposited the letter.

‘We have in our memory the many occasions on which Cuba has extended its hand of solidarity to the world and to our people in an exemplary and decisive way, since the 1960 earthquake in Valdivia,’ the text refers.

The over 400 signatories recall the support for the Government of President Salvador Allende, the reception of thousands of Chileans with their families after the 1973 coup d’état and the possibility for over 600 young Chileans, including many Mapuche, to graduate as doctors in Cuba.

Mauricio Calvo, member of the “Colectivo de Internacionalistas de Solidaridad por Cuba,” told Prensa Latina that the aim is for the Chilean Government to take all diplomatic steps to remove the country from the States Sponsoring Terrorism list.

In addition, La Moneda should demand an immediate end to the US blockade against Cuba for over six decades, and provide immediate aid in the form of food and medical supplies to defuse the complex situation of the Cuban people. Vasili Carrillo, also from this group, explained to this agency that the letter was previously delivered to the presidency of the Chamber of Deputies and Senators of the National Congress.
