“So we cannot afford to stop or deviate half way in humanity’s climate journey,” Stiell said at the opening of the Bonn Climate Change Conference, which will run in Bonn until June 13.
Some 6,000 participants, including national delegates and civil society representatives, will address critical issues such as the establishment of more ambitious national climate commitments, climate finance, the new transparency mechanism, the energy transition and the final review of the gender work plan.
The event, also known as the June Meetings, kicked off the negotiation process ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29), which will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, in November.
The UN official urged participants to move forward in creating their national climate adaptation plans.
“We need all countries to have a plan by 2025 and to move forward with its implementation by 2030,” he underscored revealing that only 57 countries have developed one so far.
