According to a message from the official on X, the day before, Panama sent by air to the northern country 49,3 tons of illicit substance, mainly cocaine, to be incinerated, but there is still a large amount that will be burned in a plant that is ready and only requires bureaucratic procedures for it to start operating.
Panama has decided not to burn cocaine in the open air to avoid contamination, since the country is carbon negative and seeks to preserve the environment.
According to Pino, there is still a large quantity of drugs, without specifying details, although recent reports of that portfolio account for the seizure between January and March of this year of more than 31,5 tons of drugs.
Every month, Panama’s security agencies seize 12 tons of drugs, which means that every quarter the storage spaces end up saturated.
Last year Panama seized 119,2 tons of drugs, down from a record 138,4 tons in 2022.
For several analysts, the Central American nation is a transit point for drugs coming from South America, mainly Colombia, and destined for the United States and also Europe.
