Calabria Governor Roberto Occhiuto said on social media and was quoted in an article in Gazzetta del Sud that the procedures are already underway so that new Cuban specialists in emergency medicine, gynecology, orthopedics, radiology, cardiology, and pediatrics can join the brigade.
The article refers to an interview on May 31 with pediatrician Ivan Martinez, coordinator of the Cuban medical team in Crotone province, who emphasized his country’s priority to train doctors.
“Our leader, Fidel Castro, focused on the training of professionals in several sectors, including medicine, to help Third World countries, and this time it was requested by one of the most economically significant nations,” which faces a complex healthcare situation, the physician added.
The government of Calabria “had the courage to ask for help from those who always help with their doctors, and of course we accepted. Although it was not easy at the beginning, the Cuban doctors, with their skills, overcame all mistrust, and the experience so far is extraordinary,” Martinez expressed.
