Caricom welcomes appointment of Prime Minister in Haiti

Georgetown, May 30 (Prensa Latina) The Caribbean Community (Caricom) today welcomed the appointment of Harry Conille as the prime minister of the transitional government in Haiti, considering it an important step for the return of constitutional order there.

The bloc said in a statement that the country was thus on the right path to hold free and fair elections, apart from reiterating permanent support for the new authorities because there are still obstacles to recovering stability in the French-speaking territory.

According to it, it hopes that under Conille’s command the establishment of the institutions required for the work of the transitional government will be completed and it advocated that the interests of the nation and the people come first.

Likewise, Caricom called for redoubling efforts to reactivate the entities responsible for public services, the delivery of humanitarian aid, socioeconomic development and the holding of elections.

With Conille appointed as ruler, the situation in Haiti is expected to calm down, where much of the capital remains under gang control.

The president received unanimous approval from the Presidential Transition Council, established last April and made up of several groups, including Petit Desalin, a party led by former senator and presidential candidate Jean-Charles Moïse; EDE/RED, led by former Prime Minister Claude Joseph; and Montana Accord, a group of leaders from civil society and other political groups.
