Sommerfeld made it clear in an interview that “the only thing that is non-negotiable” is the surrender of former vice president Jorge Glas, who was detained during the assault on the Mexican embassy.
Despite the breaking of official ties, the minister stated that “trade is in force between the two countries and attention to citizens” through agreements with other embassies and international organizations.
The Foreign Minister did not mention which state would act as a mediator, although her Mexican counterpart, Alicia Bárcena, told the Mexican radio that “most likely it will be the government of Switzerland.”
Meanwhile, Glas, 54, remains detained and on hunger strike in a maximum security prison in the city of Guayaquil, amid concerns for his health.
