India announces 1 million dollars in relief for Papua New Guinea

New Delhi, May 28 (Prensa Latina) India has announced it will be donating US$1 million in relief assistance for Papua New Guinea after a landslide Friday buried alive over 2,000 people in the country, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) informed on Tuesday.

MEA said in a statement that the immediate monetary aid was for the relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts in the country, which is a close friend and partner under the Forum for India-Pacific islands Cooperation (FIPIC).

MEA recalled that after learning of May 24´s tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deepest condolences and conveyed his readiness to provide all possible assistance at this difficult time.

The statement added: “India has firmly stood by Papua New Guinea during times of difficulty and devastation caused by natural disasters, as in the wake of the earthquake in 2018 and volcanic eruptions in 2019 and 2023.”
