Paraguay faces an increase in respiratory illnesses

Asuncion, May 27 (Prensa Latina) Paraguayan health authorities urged the population to get vaccinated and take extreme care, especially children and the elderly, given the drastic increase in cases of respiratory diseases during the current cold season.

The Ministry of Public Health reminded them that immunization and actions such as handwashing, ventilation of premises, use of face masks, and early care are some of the useful tools to prevent these ailments.

According to the institution, in the last week, there has been a 13% increase in consultations for influenza, Rhinovirus, and Covid-19, and the number of patients has risen to 23,418 persons.

It also reported a rise in hospitalizations, with a higher incidence among individuals over 60 years of age, between five and 19 years of age, and among children under two years.

Paraguay is currently experiencing its winter and, for example, this week it is suffering the impact of a cold front that has lowered the thermometers to four degrees and will last for several days, while regions in the north and east are also experiencing heavy rains.

The persistence of the extreme weather led the government to set up shelters to protect the indigenous people arriving in the country’s capital.
