Colombia backs up project to strengthen CAN energy cooperation

Bogota, May 23 (Prensa Latina) Colombia backed up the approval of the draft resolution that will facilitate electricity transactions among the countries of the Andean Community (CAN), the Ministry of Energy and Mines announced on Thursday.

According to the statement, the ministers of Mines and Energy of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, who are part of the CAN, and Chile, signed a declaration in Lima, in which they commit to work on integration to have increasingly secure and resilient electricity systems in the transition to a cleaner energy matrix.

By 2026, the announcement added, electricity transactions among Colombia, Ecuador and Peru would set off, establishing the known Andean Short-Term Electricity Market (MAERCP), thanks to a favorable opinion from CAN in that regard.

The Colombian delegation discussed the regional challenges with the energy authorities of the neighboring countries, stressing the importance of a fair transition involving society and marginalized populations.

Juan Bedoya, director of the Office of Regulatory and Business Affairs of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, highlighted that the current transmission infrastructure between Colombia and Ecuador is an example of development in the region, the text added.
