Romania rejects possibility of sending of troops to Ukraine

Bucharest, May 22 (Prensa Latina) Romania is in no way contemplating sending troops to Ukraine, President Klaus Iohannis said, amid statements in that regard from other European states like France.

Romania has no plans at all to send soldiers to Ukraine, the president said at a meeting with the press in the Peter Kraului Park, on the occasion of the International Day of Biodiversity, local television reported.

That was just a discussion and I think it is over now, Iohannis said, commenting on a question about the possible supply of US Patriot anti-missile systems to Kiev, a decision that should be analyzed by the General Staff of the Armed Forces and a military council.

In addition, the Romanian leader denied the existence of a direct threat to his country’s security at the moment, although he affirmed that the military is always prepared for any situation.

Local media are commenting on the last-minute suggestions by some lawmakers in European parliaments to entrust states such as Romania, the Czech Republic or Poland with the creation of a no-fly zone in Ukraine.

To this end, the parliamentarians consider that the aforementioned countries should use their anti-aircraft and anti-missile defense systems to destroy targets in Ukrainian airspace, clearly alluding to Russian fighter jets.
