New York lawmakers seek to cut ties with Israel

Washington, May 22 (Prensa Latina) A bill that seeks to cut ties of non-profit organizations with Israel was reintroduced by a group of legislators in the U.S. state of New York in light of the war in Gaza.

The state assemblymen introduced the “Not On Our Dime!” bill, which would prohibit such New York organizations from using tax-deductible donations to fund Israeli settlers and military units in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

The initiative would also prevent them from “abetting and being complicit” in the construction of new settlements in the Gaza Strip, as well as backing Israeli military interventions that violate international law, Democracy Now news service noted.

The legislation was first introduced in 2023 by New York Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani and state Senator Jabari Brisport, and according to the report federal Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez endorsed the bill Monday during a political rally.

This week the International Criminal Court (ICC) announced that it had requested arrest warrants for alleged war crimes against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, but the U.S. reaction was swift.

President Joe Biden criticized the ICC petition during a White House event for Jewish American Heritage Month.
