Dominican President appreciates historic relationship with Cuba

Santo Domingo, May 22 (Prensa Latina) Dominican President Luis Abinader thanked his Cuban counterpart, Miguel Díaz-Canel, on Wednesday for his congratulations on his reelection in the general elections on Sunday, May 19.

‘Thank you very much, President @DiazCanelB, for your congratulations.

We deeply value our historic relationship and will continue to work together to strengthen the ties that unite our sister nations,’ the Dominican president wrote in his X account.

On May 20, shortly after Abinader’s victory at the polls, the Cuban head of State reaffirmed to his Dominican peer ‘the will to continue to strengthen the historic relations that unite us with that sister nation,’ in a message that was also published on X.

A delegation from the Dominican Foreign Ministry, headed by Minister Roberto Alvarez, paid an official visit to Cuba in September 2024, an occasion on which both countries identified bilateral cooperation projects, commercial exchange and other types of collaboration, for the benefit of both peoples.

The Dominican presidential website reported at the time that during a meeting with President Miguel Díaz-Canel, the delegation expressed interest in strengthening trade with Cuba in the fields of biotechnology, science, agriculture, education, pharmaceuticals, health care and other key sectors, to advance the development of their peoples.

Diaz-Canel expressed the Cuban Government’s willingness to take advantage of the existing potentialities to continue to strengthen bilateral ties, according to the same source.

President Luis Abinader traveled to Havana in September to participate in the assembly of the Group of 77 and China.

Cuba and the Dominican Republic reestablished relations on April 16, 1998, after the visit of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, to this country.

Both nations are united in history by a permanent relationship of friendship and solidarity. jg/abo/ro/mpv
