UN meets with non-legitimate Taliban authorities

United Nations, May 21 (Prensa Latina) The UN confirmed on Tuesday recent talks with the Taliban authorities in Afghanistan despite the fact that the agency does not recognize their de facto Government.

The lately visit of the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo allowed for debates on pivotal issues including access to education for Afghan women.

The envoy’s agenda included meetings with the de facto leadership and the diplomatic community in Kabul, as well as with representatives of civil society.

Plus, DiCarlo extended an early invitation to Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi to attend the next meeting of special envoys for Afghanistan, focused on increasing international engagement in a more coherent, coordinated and structured manner.

The meeting with the Taliban poses a strong challenge for the UN, which does not acknowledge its legitimacy after three years in power while the de facto authorities insist on joining the UN.

Likewise, humanitarian organizations present in the country agree upon the pressing need to reinforce aid to civilians, impacted by surging levels of poverty and the scourge of extreme natural phenomena.
