The results of the vote on the draft resolution on the prevention of an arms race in outer space and space security submitted by Russia and co-sponsored by China at the Security Council are disappointing,” the diplomat said in a statement.
Zakharova noted that the United States and its allies, despite all the steps taken by Moscow and Beijing to take their proposals into account, opposed the Russia-China initiative.
This way, the spokeswoman continued, Washington and its followers “once again showed their true priorities in the space, aimed not at keeping the space free of weapons of any kind, but at emplacing weapons in outer space and turning it into a theater of military confrontation.”
Unfortunately, however, another opportunity to ensure the prevention of an arms race in outer space has been lost because of them, she added.
In addition, Zakharova stressed that Russia will continue its efforts to keep space free of weapons of any kind and prevent it from becoming another zone of tension and armed confrontation.
On Monday, the UN Security Council rejected the draft resolution on the prevention of an arms race in space.
The document was supported by seven countries, seven others spoke against it, and one country abstained from voting, so the draft resolution did not get the nine votes needed for its adoption.
In favor of the initiative were, in addition to Russia, China, Algeria, Guyana, Ecuador, Mozambique and Sierra Leone, while Switzerland was the only one to abstain, with the US, France, the UK, Japan, Slovenia, South Korea and Malta against.
