Dominican president affirms he will form a consensus government

Santo Domingo, May 21 (Prensa Latina) The Dominican president, Luis Abinader, promised today to form a government of consensus, despite having obtained the majority of seats in the National Congress.

The president, who will direct the country’s destinies for another four years after winning the presidential elections last Sunday, reiterated that he will resume dialogue with opposition leaders and citizens to reconcile the National Pact, which will cover all areas of public politics.

He commented that on Sunday night, when the presidential candidates of the two major opposition parties called him to congratulate him, he told them that in the coming days he would be available to meet with them with the aim of resuming agreements that led to the creation of the Social Economic Council.

He maintained that his idea is to agree on the country’s important issues and discuss them with Dominican society and the opposition.

Abinader announced there may be changes in his government cabinet with the aim of moving forward and pointed out that this first month they will work on planning the relaunch of the Executive.

He also referred to the actions to be promoted to apply the reforms that he left pending during his first term, including the fiscal one, which he specified must be carried out with the consensus of the social sectors.

He insisted that the fiscal issue must include tax and public spending reform, with the aim of reducing poverty and raising funds to help those most in need.

After the general elections this Sunday, the Government party achieved a majority of 29 legislators, out of 32.

For the opposition, only the Fuerza del Pueblo managed to establish three senators, Omar Fernández, for the National District, Edward Espiritusanto, from La Romana, and Félix Bautista, representative of the San Juan province.

In this way, the PRM consolidated its presence in the Senate of the Republic and managed to prevail for the second consecutive time. In the 2020 elections he won 20 positions.
