Strong frontal system affects central Chile

Santiago de Chile, May 20 (Prensa Latina) An intense frontal system entered the Chilean regions of Valparaiso and the Metropolitan Region on Monday, where in the first hours of rainfalls over 50,000 homes were left without electricity service.

According to forecasts, the heaviest rainfalls will occur between tonight and tomorrow Tuesday, and the authorities warned of the possibility of landslides in the vicinity of the Coast and Andes mountain ranges.

The Superintendence of Electricity and Fuels demanded that the companies in charge of producing and distributing electricity take all measures to reduce the impact on the population.

Meteorologist Gianfranco Marcone pointed out that on Wednesday a cold core will enter at altitude, and the isotherm, that is to say the point where water freezes, will rise, generating rain on the snow, which will increase the danger of flooding.

The specialist recalled that Santiago is a high-risk city in terms of climate, due to its location on the side of the mountain range, where ravines can be activated.

In Valparaíso, meanwhile, concern is centered on the areas devastated by the recent wildfires in February.

There are complaints that the emergency houses that were given to some of the victims are poorly built and that rain is pouring through roofs, walls and windows.

The municipality of Viña del Mar reported that blankets, sandbags and polyethylene sheeting are being delivered to strengthen the houses, and the Liceo Bicentenario has been set up as a temporary shelter.
