Colombian government and ELN guerrillas renew talks in Venezuela

Caracas, May 20 (Prensa Latina) The Government of Colombia and the guerrilla of the National Liberation Army (ELN) plan to continue the talks that began last month in Caracas, where they announced that they would receive the executive report of the participation model and recommendations.

At the meeting, which took place in an extraordinary session between April 12th and 22nd, the parties announced that they would also sign the agreement on the first point of the dialogue agenda, referred to previously.

In a joint statement, the delegations thanked Venezuela for hosting the work of the Dialogue Table, the help provided by the guarantor countries to the permanent companions, and “to the group of support, accompaniment and cooperation countries.”

The working groups expressed their gratitude and recognition to Mexico for its exemplary work as a guarantor country and their solidarity and support for the events that occurred on April 5th at the embassy in Ecuador and recalled that Mexico hosted two cycles for the peace process.

In another joint message, they noted deep sadness at the news of the murder of the social and environmental leader Narciso Beleño in the municipality of Santa Rosa del Sur, Bolívar, on the night of April 21st, and announced the creation of a commission of the parties to visit the region as soon as possible to allow the Board to “make the pertinent decisions”.

The delegations condemned this crime and declared that it “highlights the need to reinforce guarantees for organizations, popular movements, and the civil population.”

In particular, they expressed that in the region where he was murdered, the communities denounced “a strong and extensive presence of paramilitary structures,” which carried out a new incursion since April 18th.
