Gen. Stevenazzi rejects that Uruguayan Army assumes police duties

Montevideo, May 19 (Prensa Latina) General Mario Stevenazzi, head of the Uruguayan Army, on Sunday rejected proposals to attend the electoral campaign to use that force to fight internal crime.

Stevenazzi stated that there is no one to spare in the Army. I say this because when proposals are made to assign us tasks different from those we perform, it gives the feeling that our troops are idle in the military units, and it is far from being true.

In a speech on the 213th anniversary of the armed institution, he assured that the Army participates in security missions according to the Constitution.

“We are professionals to fulfill the national defense task, and we are trained for it. Our basic armament is the rifle, and our collective armament varies, but with high firepower,” he added.

He warned, “I say this so that the effect of their means can be visualized and the soldier, the lieutenant, or the captain are not accused and insulted later.”

The general rejected the idea of transferring Army personnel to police duties.

In such a case, he warned, what should be stopped or how many military units should be suppressed, with the corresponding consequences for national and civil defense, ought to be defined.
