The arrest follows fears of a likely getaway or continuation of his criminal activity, the spokesperson for the criminal court in northeastern Pezinok Katarina Kudjakova stated.
On Wednesday, Fico was shot several times as he was leaving a government meeting in the town of Handlova, 190 kilometers from the capital, causing serious wounds to his abdomen and chest.
Following the incident, the PM underwent surgery, and was placed in an induced coma; he later went through a second operation, and he is now stable but his health condition is still life-threatening, according to the latest reports.
The alleged attacker is charged with the crime of attempted premeditated assassination, which can result in a life sentence.
According to the Slovak Interior Ministry, the attack was politically motivated.
Numerous countries have condemned the attempt on Fico’s life wishing him a speedy recovery.
In the aftermath, police reinforced security for politicians, and ramped up surveillance of people and places where there could be potential threats.
