The date commemorates the promulgation of the Agrarian Reform Law, an event of transcendental importance in the history of the Revolution, on May 17, 65 years ago.
On his X profile, the Cuban head of State quoted the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, when he highlighted what the signing of this document meant for all peasants: “(…) the disappearance of all fear. From that moment on, all peasants could feel safe on their land, without fear of being expelled.”
Cuba National People’s Power Assembly (Parliament) President Esteban Lazo congratulated the farmers on the same platform.
“People who every day add with their effort and dedication to food production,” Lazo wrote on the Parliament’s X account.
Communist Party Organization Secretary Roberto Morales wrote that the Agrarian Reform Law was the best tribute to peasant leader Niceto Pérez, who was assassinated 13 years earlier by landowners.
Due to his symbolism, the ANAP was later founded in May 17, 1961, Morales said.
Every year, on May 17, Cuban farmers celebrate Farmers’ Day and the anniversary of the signing of the First Agrarian Reform Law, one of the most significant measures adopted by the Revolution in its first phase.
