According to press reports, Uruguay exports electricity to Río Grande do Sul, whose energy infrastructure has been compromised by floods.
At least four hydroelectric plants, three substations and 24 transmission lines were affected by the floods.
Transmission began earlier in the current month. Since then, the Uruguayan state energy company, UTE, shipped 7.5 GWh through the Melo-Candiota converter.
The supply generally occurs during the afternoon, when the greatest electrical demand begins.
The digital site Ámbito reported that Brazil will also import rice from Uruguay due to the floods, after the Brazilian government decided to import it temporarily to prevent a price increase.
Río Grande do Sul produces 70 percent of the rice in Brazil but in the current harvest millions in losses are estimated.
