The visit aims to gather information on any form of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance to assess the overall human rights situation of people of African descent in Colombia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a statement.
As part of its agenda, the delegation will visit the cities of Tumaco, Cali, Buenaventura, and Quibdo and meet with several national entities, local authorities, people of African descent, civil society organizations, and individuals working on issues of racism and racial discrimination.
The delegation includes Catherine Namakula and Bina D Costa, members of the UN Working Group. They will present a report on the conclusions of the visit to the Human Rights Council in September 2025.
The experts will also promote the International Decade for People of African Descent 2015-2024, which aims to strengthen national, regional, and international cooperation to protect the human rights of people of African descent globally.
This is the Group’s first visit to Colombia since its mandate was established in 2002 by Resolution 2002/68 of the then Commission on Human Rights.
