At a press conference, the CEO’s Water and Sewerage Company Inc, Zilta Leslie George, explained that the measure is timely due to the exceptional lack of rainfall, and as part of the management plan, the company pursued a water rationing program for specific sections of the distribution network.
George added that it will remain in force until water levels increase.
Several Caribbean nations are now resorting to restrictions on the use and supply of drinking water, as well as sanctions to ensure service in the face of the severe drought that has drained many reservoirs.
Island states are under stress because of the dry period, while forecasts for the region agree that water sources will evaporate because of the very high temperatures and low rainfall during the summer.
However, experts predict a very active hurricane season that could alleviate droughts, although hurricanes usually cause flooding and major material destruction as they pass over inhabited land.
