Guterres spurs to stop escalation in Rafah due to humanitarian impact

United Nations, May 14 (Prensa Latina) United Nations Secretary-General (UNSG) Antonio Guterres spurred on Tuesday to a halt to the military escalation in/around Rafah, warning of its impact on humanitarian access in the southern Gaza governorate.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, Guterres called on Israel and Hamas to respect civilians and protect them at all times.

Guterres urged for an immediate humanitarian cease-fire and the release of all hostages while calling for the immediate opening of the Rafah crossing for unimpeded humanitarian access throughout Gaza.

His remarks coincided with humanitarian agencies on the ground warning of continued displacement in the border demarcation with Egypt after Israeli authorities ordered the evacuation of the area.

On Tuesday, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) reported that about 450,000 people had left the governorate in the past week ‘fleeing wherever they can, including into the rubble and sand dunes.’

‘As we have repeatedly said, all sides must respect international humanitarian law at all times,’ Guterres’ deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq stated stressing calls to meet their essential needs, including food, shelter, water and health.
