Syria and WHO review cooperation programs in health sector

Damascus, May 13 (Prensa Latina) Syrian Prime Minister Hussein Arnous and the regional director of the World Health Organization (WHO) for the Eastern Mediterranean, Hanan Balkhi, met on Monday to review the ways to improve cooperation in health care.

The two sides also discussed training programs for medical personnel and the transfer of expertise and technologies to Ministry of Health cadres.

The prime minister appreciated the efforts by the organization, which has cooperated with the Syrian State in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic and during the post-earthquake phase.

Arnous said that the healthcare system in Syria is gradually recovering and will overcome the difficulties it faces in cooperation with WHO and other international partners.

He described the government’s support for the healthcare sector through the rehabilitation of hospitals and medical centers, and its support for pharmaceutical plants to continue production, in addition to making a set of decisions regarding medical and health personnel with the aim of motivating them.

The chief executive charged that the economic blockade generated shortages in advanced devices such as CT scans, MRIs and anti-cancer drugs.

Balkhi, in turn, explained the Organization’s plans and programs in the Middle East, focusing on scientific cooperation, training and automation that helps develop work and provide physicians with scientific knowledge and experience.
