The Kenyan Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO) said the prolonged rains destroyed several health facilities, contaminated water sources with fecal matter, and filled latrines with flood water.
The health situation regarding possible or imminent outbreaks of waterborne diseases could worsen throughout the East African region, the Down to Earth portal reported.
The health ministry explained to the public how to protect themselves against cholera and diarrheal diseases amid the outbreak.
The WHO advised Kenyans to be on high alert, as the country faces an imminent threat of water-borne and food-borne diseases due to increased consumption of contaminated food and water.
Possible malaria outbreaks cannot be ruled out either, especially in critical areas, due to the rise of mosquito breeding sites.
WHO will continue to support the response to the health emergency and remain vigilant for disease outbreaks that can easily spread, said Abdourahmane Diallo, the health agency’s representative in Kenya.
