Death toll rises to 147 and 127 missing in southern Brazilian floods

Brasilia, May 13 (Prensa Latina) The death toll rose today to 147 and the number of missing persons to 127, due to the heavy rains and floods that have devastated the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul since the end of April.

The most recent report of the Civil Defense indicates that 806 people were injured, 76 000 were rescued, 80,826 remain in shelters and more than 500,000 remain displaced by the storms.

The report assures that 447 municipalities are affected and that the water level is expected to rise by approximately 5.50 to 5.60 meters in Porto Alegre, the state capital, in the next few days. The state of Gaucho reported two tornadoes over the weekend.

Winds up to 140 kilometers per hour affected the city of Cambará do Sul, in the Serra Gaucha region.

Authorities called the population not to return to flooded places and to remain in safe environment.

In addition to the Guaíba, the Civil Defense issued an alert stating that the Caí and Taquari rivers, will present a significant rise in their levels until this Monday.

Among the cities on alert in the Taquari valley are Encantado, Lajeado and Roca Sales, where in a landslide, a family died hugging each other.
