Cuban president has busy agenda in Russia

Moscow, May 9 (Prensa Latina) The President of the Republic and First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), Miguel Diaz-Canel, concluded a busy work agenda on the second day of his visit to Russia.

In the first activity in this capital, the president paid tribute to the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, laying a wreath at the monument in his honor at the square named after him in Moscow’s Sokol district.

Earlier, Diaz-Canel held a brief meeting with members of the Cuban Embassy in Russia.

After visiting the monument to Fidel Castro, the Cuban head of State was received by the vice president of the Russian Security Council and chairman of the United Russia party, Dmitry Medvedev, who asked him to “convey greetings and best wishes to Army General Raul Castro.”

Medvedev and Diaz-Canel expressed satisfaction with the results achieved so far between their political organizations and the potentialities of their work for their development in the future.

Later, the Cuban president participated for the first time in person in the expanded meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, organized by Russia on the tenth anniversary of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU).

In his speech, Diaz-Canel emphasized that he was in Russia on the occasion of the 64th anniversary of the reestablishment of relations between Cuba and the Soviet Union.

He thanked the EEU members for their long-standing support for the Cuban people’s struggle against the cruel economic, commercial, and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba.

“The Cuban Government grants great importance to economic, trade, financial, and cooperation relations with the EEU and its member States, taking as a premise the historic relations that unite us with that group of countries,” Diaz-Canel said at the meeting.

As a culmination of the day, the Cuban president met with the leader of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, Gennady Zyuganov, and both leaders confirmed the excellent relations between their political parties.

On Thursday, the delegation headed by Diaz-Canel participated in the parade in Moscow’s Red Square to commemorate the 79th anniversary of Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War.

This is Diaz-Canel’s third visit to Russia as head of State. The first one took place from October 27-30, 2019, and the second one from November 19-22, 2022. In all of them, he met with President Vladimir Putin.
