Both the former head of the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), Fernando Tuesta, and the promoter of the Citizens’ Initiative movement, Julio Schiappa, focused their criticism on the lately blocking of the re-election of the head of the aforementioned body, Piero Corvetto.

Both agreed that the decision was unjustified, and Tuesta pointed out that the only magistrate who voted against Corvetto was Marco Falconi, whom he challenged to mention a technical-legal reason for vetoing the official, pointing that the reason was the unfounded accusations of fraud in the 2021 elections.

Corvetto’s ratification for another four years was approved by four of the five members of the National Justice Board (JNJ), but needed five of the seven members of the body that appoints, evaluates and removes judges and prosecutors.

The other two NJB judges were weeks ago dismissed by parliament and reinstated by a court ruling that overruled the Constitutional Court, whose decisions are often favorable to the right-wing-controlled legislature.

The dismissal of the judges was considered unjustified by Tuesta and Schiappa, and the former, a national and international expert on the matter, noting that Falconi subjected Corvetto to numerous questions during the evaluation session, which he answered competently.

Tuesta further underscored that the new reforms that the parliamentary majority has begun to process aim at eradicating the JNJ, leaving the appointment of a body to replace it in the hands of the legislature.
