His statement follows recent attacks against politicians and election workers in the country.
Populists, radicals and right-wing extremists want to challenge, perhaps destroy, the core of the community that our country has become over the past 70 years, the politician from the Greens party said on the sidelines of the OMR digital trade and marketing fair in Hamburg.
Habeck considered democracy is therefore under greater pressure than it has been for decades and said that right-wing populism is isolating problems and debates in such a way that a sensible dialogue aimed at reaching an agreement is impossible.
