Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo will highlight the importance of establishing public policies in accordance with the principles of human rights, where the focus is the protection of people.
Being committed to orderly, regular and safe migration, Colombia will present its model of migratory regularization and socioeconomic integration of migrants, thanks to which more than 2.5 million migrants have been documented and integrated, the Foreign Ministry explained.
This model is an experience that can be replicated in the signatory countries of the Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection as a good practice, due to its contribution to reducing irregular migration on the continent and by providing a legal means of permanence in Colombia, the statement said.
Murillo will also request to speed up cooperation for development in Guatemala, especially in those populations on which irregular migration has a greater impact, as is the case of the municipalities that are on the migrant transit route in the area of the Darien Jungle.
The minister will also insist that the migration crisis must be treated from the perspective of shared responsibility among the countries of origin, transit and destination, given that these different facets of migration affect all States, and the biggest burden cannot be reduce only to transit nations.
During the meeting, the foreign minister will hold a series of bilateral meetings with other officials from countries and international organizations.
