The National Center for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) is organizing the event, which demonstrates India’s effort to facilitate constructive global dialogue on environmental management, scientific collaboration and cooperation in Antarctica, the Ministry of Earth Sciences said.
These meetings are convened annually within the framework of the Antarctic Treaty System, and serve as forums for the consultative parties to the agreement and other interested parties to address the pressing environmental, scientific and governance problems of the Antarctica.
M. Ravichandran, secretary of the entity, expressed interest in India’s active participation in the events to foster significant exchanges of knowledge and experience in order to promote the shared objectives of environmental conservation and scientific research in the Antarctic region.
Topics to be discussed include strategic planning for the sustainable management of Antarctica and its resources, political, legal and institutional operations, biodiversity prospecting, inspections and exchange of information and data.
Participants will also analyze matters related to research, collaboration, capacity development, cooperation and the tourism framework and conferences of the Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research will be held.
The agenda of the 26th Meeting of the Committee for Environmental Protection focuses on the assessment of the impact and management of the Antarctic ecosystem, as well as the response to climate change, protection and management plans for Antarctica, its marine space and conservation of biodiversity.

India será sede de Reunión Consultiva del Tratado Antártico
Nueva Delhi, 2 may (Prensa Latina) India acogerá la Reunión Consultiva 46 del Tratado Antártico y la vigésimosexta del Comité para la Protección Ambiental del 20 al 30 de mayo en la ciudad de Kochi, estado de Kerala.
El Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Polares y Oceánicas (NCPOR) organiza el evento, que demuestra el esfuerzo de la India por facilitar un diálogo global constructivo sobre gestión ambiental, colaboración científica y cooperación en la Antártida, indicó el Ministerio de Ciencias de la Tierra.
Dichas reuniones son convocadas anualmente en el marco del Sistema del Tratado Antártico, y sirven como foros para que las partes consultivas del acuerdo y otros interesados aborden los apremiantes problemas ambientales, científicos y de gobernanza de la zona más fría del planeta.
M. Ravichandran, secretario de la entidad, manifestó el interés de una activa participación de la India en los eventos para fomentar intercambios significativos de conocimientos y experiencia en función de promover los objetivos compartidos de conservación ambiental e investigación científica en la región antártica.
Entre los temas a debatir se incluyen la planificación estratégica para la gestión sostenible de la Antártida y sus recursos, operaciones políticas, legales e institucionales, prospección de biodiversidad, inspecciones e intercambio de información y datos.
Los participantes también analizarán lo relacionado con la investigación, colaboración, desarrollo de capacidades, cooperación y del marco turístico y se llevarán a cabo conferencias del Comité Científico de Investigaciones Antárticas.
La agenda de la Reunión 26 del Comité para la Protección Ambiental se centra en la evaluación del impacto y la gestión del ecosistema antártico, así como la respuesta al cambio climático, los planes de protección y gestión de la Antártida, su espacio marino y la conservación de la biodiversidad.
