During a visit to Beirut, accompanied by Cyprus’ President Nikos Christodoulides, the head of the European Executive stressed the bloc’s intention to support Lebanon and contribute to its socio-economic stability.
According to her, the proposed assistance will focus on strengthening essential services, boosting the economy, supporting security forces, and enhancing cooperation on migration issues.
Regarding security and borders, Von der Leyen noted that the European Union (EU) will provide equipment and training while emphasizing support for the Lebanese Armed Forces.
On migration issues, she expressed the need to maintain legal channels to the EU, and Lebanon cooperates with the community to prevent illegal human trafficking and combat mafias.
Since 2011, the European Union has provided more than three billion euros in aid to Lebanon, including 670 million euros in bilateral assistance and 1.5 billion euros through the regional fund to address the refugee crisis.
