During the open debate called by UNGA, Cuba’s permanent representative to UN, Ernesto Soberón, called for the immediate reversal of what he considered a historic injustice.
The State of Palestine has been recognized by over 140 countries, including Cuba. It is an active member of the international community, multilateral forums and subject to rights and obligations in various international instruments, Soberón stated.
Undoubtedly, Palestine has earned the right to full membership in the United Nations, the Cuban diplomat asserted.
Soberón rejected Israel’s statements assuring that Tel Aviv has no authority to give lessons on human rights.
“Israel is only trying to divert attention from its genocidal crimes, crimes against humanity as well as apartheid, which have been taking shape for 75 years against the Palestinian people,” he said.
In this regard, Soberón recalled the deadly toll of the offensive in Gaza, which accumulates over 34,000 dead, most of them women and children; nearly 2 million displaced people; and the high risk of death as a result of famine and diseases.
The Cuban representative described as unacceptable the failure of the UN Security Council (UNSC) to comply with its own resolutions to put an end to Israel’s abuses, in which the United States has historically been an abettor.
In this regard, Soberón singled out the United States for repeatedly obstructing and using veto to hinder the body’s action, undermining regional peace, security and stability.
“The world is witnessing the untold suffering of the Palestinian people,” the Cuban ambassador warned.
