Havana and Sarajevo established relations on April 29, 1997. Cuba was the first country in Latin America to create ties with that country on the Balkan Peninsula.
Both nations expressed their interest in strengthening the existing ties in April 2023, during Bosnian President Željka Cvijanović’s visit to Havana.
On that occasion, President Miguel Díaz-Canel pointed out that there are many areas in which Cuba and Bosnia and Herzegovina can have a broader and mutually beneficial relationship, such as agriculture, food production, tourism, higher education, science, technology and innovation.
At the time, Díaz-Canel thanked the Bosnian Government for its traditional support for Cuba’s fight against the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States.
