Unesco warns of negative impact of social networks on girls

Paris, Apr 25 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) today published a report warning about the negative consequences of social networks on the welfare and learning of girls.

The report recognizes that digital technologies can support the teaching process, but warns that they also bring risks such as invasion of privacy, distraction from learning and cyberbullying.

In this regard, it details how social networks amplify gender stereotypes, producing negative effects on the well-being, learning and career choices of girls, UNESCO said in a statement.

According to the institution’s Director-General Audrey Azoulay, minors increasingly socialize through social networks, but too often algorithm-based platforms amplify their exposure to gender stereotypes.

“The design of these platforms, Azoulay said, must take ethical considerations into account and Social networks should not confine women and girls to roles that limit their educational and career aspirations.”
