According to the Minister of Defense of the Baltic Republic, Laurynas Kasciunas, this will be the largest exercise ever carried out by authorities of that country.
The maneuvers, scheduled for June 4-21, are aimed at strengthening the military capabilities of the armed forces of several nations in ensuring security and freedom of navigation in the Baltic Sea.
According to the news portal, ships from the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, France and other European territories will take part in these exercises.
Last April 22, Lithuania began the largest military maneuvers recorded in that state during the last decade, with the assistance of 20,000 military personnel from its national army and allies of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
This time, more than 10,000 people from the active reserve (those who completed their military service less than 10 years ago) were called up for this strategy, although only 2,500 actually participate in the exercises organized until May 10.
Although the Baltops have been taking place since 1972, after the beginning of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine, they acquired a particular significance because of NATO’s constant threats to Moscow.
