Mexican president questions US report on human rights

Mexico, Apr 23 (Prensa Latina) President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Tuesday questioned a report by the US Department of State on human rights, and pointed out that the neighboring country considers itself the judge of the world.

“Yesterday, for example, the State Department issued a resolution saying that human rights are being violated in Mexico, and they consider themselves the judges of the world,” the president said at h is regular morning press briefing at the National Palace.

“We are respectful with them. They should respect us,” he said.

The president pointed out that Mexico does not ask Washington why it spends billions of dollars on war, why it does not release Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks, “who is unjustly imprisoned,” why it does not care for young people dying of drug addiction, or why it represses and mistreats migrants.

“We do not issue a letter of good behavior because it does not correspond to us, but they remained with the mania of 200 years ago, since the Monroe Doctrine (summarized in the phrase “America for the Americans”),” the head of State added.

“Hopefully, this will change because it is not helping them. They are stagnating in managing their foreign policy, with all due respect,” López Obrador concluded.
